The South Central and North Central regions had the lowest losses : 14% and 20%; Northern and NYC Metro regions had the highest losses at 38% and 46%. Oxalic acid was the preferred varroa mite treatment (48%), and 48% of respondents wrapped their hives for the winter. Cold weather (25%), small clusters (19%), starvation (15%), and varroa/virus (14%) , were the most common reasons given as the primary cause of winter hive loss.
