Background

Varroa mites were first reported to be present in the United States in 1986 or 87 and at that time identified as Varroa jacobsoni. But by the year 2000 it was realized that the varroa parasitizing the European Honey Bee was in fact Varroa destructor. This species of mite has now spread to all continents except Australia.
