While the previous winter of 2023-24 resulted in a very low loss of 19%, the harsher, prolonged winter of 2024-25 resulted in doubling the loss to 38% statewide. The South Central and North Central regions had the lowest losses : 16% and 27%; Northern and Western NY had the highest losses at 45% and 46%. Oxalic acid was the preferred varroa mite treatment (48%), and 50% of respondents wrapped their hives for the winter. Small weak clusters/starvation (~23%),  varroa/virus (21%), and cold weather  (21%) were the most common reasons given as the primary cause of winter hive loss.
